The game initially opens 2 days prior to the Banoi Island zombie outbreak, with the player controlling "Kilo Two", a covert operative working with Dead Island protagonist Xian Mei (who provides support over the radio) to infiltrate a Geopharm facility on the island of Narapela and assassinate a mole. Despite unexpectedly finding the facility overrun by zombies, Kilo Two succeeds in killing the mole and obtaining a copy of the Geopharm data the mole was attempting to steal. However, he is prevented from leaving due to the zombie outbreak escaping the facility and spilling out onto the island, so he instead hides the USB flash drive containing the data before being attacked off-screen by a massive creature.
Meanwhile, it is revealed that Geopharm is responsible for creating the zombie virus, and are part of a global conspiracy known as the Palm Garden Order. The mole was working together with the terrorist hacker Charon, who has also infiltrated the Palm Garden Order. The mole wanted to release the data to the public and expose the Palm Garden Order, but Charon (who blames the PGO for the death of his father) instead wants to destroy the PGO with their own zombie virus.
The plot moves ahead 6 months, with the island of Banoi still cut off from the outside world by the world's governments, who have suppressed news about the zombie outbreak. Aspiring journalist Cliff Calo, the son of an influential broadcasting executive, and his two friends Linda Waterson and Devan Mavropani, arrive on Narapela hoping to uncover the truth behind the events on Banoi. Cliff is resentful due to his father passing him up for promotion in favor of his sister, and has decided to start his own independent journalism outlet with Devan and Linda. The three of them find the island apparently deserted, and after some investigation they locate a mass grave. The dead bodies abruptly begin to re-animate, and Linda is attacked and bitten by a zombie. Soon afterwards, the three of them witness a small single-engine airplane crash lands on the island. Devan carries the injured Linda to a mobile camp on top of the island's central mountain in hopes of finding safety, while Cliff goes to investigate the plane crash. Cliff soon begins to receive radio messages from Linda, reassuring him that everything is OK and encouraging him on his progress.
Cliff reaches an airfield where the plane crashed and meets up with its pilot, Xian Mei, who seems to have survived the cliffhanger ending of Dead Island: Riptide and has come to the island searching for Kilo Two and the Geopharm data. She informs Cliff that there is a secret lab on the island, which may have a cure for the zombie outbreak. Speaking to Cliff over the radio, Xian Mei guides him to collecting 3 keycards needed to access the lab. Need for Speed: The Run
Jackson "Jack" Rourke is a fearless street racer and a mechanic, who owns a garage in San Francisco. He is indebted to the mob as he is unable to repay them the money for starting his business. He attempts to hide, but they manage to locate and kidnap him. After escaping an attempt on his life in a car crusher (his first car, a Porsche Carrera 4S), Jack, in desperation, goes to his former girlfriend and his current business partner Sam Harper at a restaurant in Chinatown. She recommends a way out: a massive illegitimate street racing event named "The Run", which is a 3000 mile (4828 km) journey across the continental USA, starting in San Francisco and ending in New York City. Sam manages Jack's $250,000 entrance fee for the race and promises him a 10% cut of the $25 million jackpot, but he has to defeat 210 other racers to win. To complicate things, he is in debt to both the police and the criminal organization, and both want to make sure that he never finishes the race.
Jack pulls out a car from his garage and begins the race. After escaping from San Francisco by driving off the unfinished replacement span of the Eastern San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Jack passes through Altamont Pass, Yosemite National Park, and Death Valley, before making it to Las Vegas in the top 150. Upon arrival, two female team racers interrogate him about his skills, and he is nearly apprehended after police shut down the city. However, he manages to escape out of Fremont Street, but is nearly crushed by a semitrailer truck. He manages to acquire a new vehicle, and heads to Chicago to make it in the top 50. On the way, he passes through the desert and up into the Rocky Mountains, where a one-on-one race against an opponent unfolds as the mountain slopes are detonated with dynamite to remove excess snow for the year. He races through Denver and the Badlands and across the Mississippi River, and upon arrival in Chicago, Marcus Blackwell, Jack's biggest rival and the main antagonist of the game, uses his connections with the mob to organize a "welcome committee". Jack is then forced out of his car and pursued on foot by the mob's machine gun-mounted helicopter. After Jack temporarily escapes from the helicopter, he acquires a stolen police car, but is pursued by the helicopter again down Lower Wacker Drive and along the river. He tries to stay out of the spotlight of the helicopter to avoid getting the vehicle shot and destroyed, but ends up crashing in a train yard. Jack escapes from the overturned police car seconds before a freight train runs it down. Escaping Chicago and entering Cleveland, he drives through an industrial train yard filled with high explosives, trying to escape the mob. Crashing through the window of a warehouse, Jack wrecks the helicopter by slamming into its tail and sending it into the side of a building. After this, Jack is directed to and see a man named Uri for a new car. On the final leg to New York, Jack races through rural Pennsylvania, the Appalachians and Big Run State Park, defeating the final racers in the process. Jack makes it to New York in the top 2, passing through New Jersey. He races Marcus Blackwell (who drives a heavily modified Tier 6 Aston Martin One-77) through the crowded morning streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and on the final stretch Marcus is killed after he flips his car. As a result, Jack wins The Run and claims the $25,000,000 jackpot.

The game opens with you aboard a plane. The glow of the seat-back
screen, a small child next to you - your son? - and a sudden, violent
crash into a remote forest. You come to, briefly, just in time to see
the unconscious child carried away by a sinister, savage figure. Next
time you wake up, you're completely alone and it's up to you to survive
what awaits outside the wreckage.
Food is an immediate concern, but luckily the plane fuselage is full of uneaten in-flight meals as well as miniature bottles of booze and soda cans. An emergency axe is conveniently placed at the ragged hole that acts as your exit. Drop down and there are more rich pickings in the form of suitcases strewn across the crash site. You quickly learn not to linger for long - those cannibals will be back to investigate soon.
You have, rather conveniently, also got a survival manual in your backpack and it's from this that you can select the things you want to craft. From a rudimentary shelter and a simple campfire to a full log cabin, garden and animal pens, nothing is off limits provided you can gather the materials. That task is made easier by the fact that any craftable items - rocks, sticks etc - have a shimmer that makes them stand out from the surrounding foliage (though there are still some peculiar quirks that arise from being in an environment full of logs, sticks and leaves, but being told that you have to collect certain ones in order to craft what you want).
